The psychological challenges of high-risk pregnancy: A path to empowerment

The period of pregnancy is a transformative journey full of joy, anticipation and hope. However, when a pregnancy is classified as high-risk, that is, when there are potential complications that may have an impact on the health of the mother, the baby, or both, this can bring about a set of challenges on an emotional and psychological level for the woman.

High-risk pregnancy is usually accompanied by intense emotional changes for the mother-to-be. The emotional landscape it can include increased anxiety, fear, vulnerability and uncertainty. These feelings, as well as the feeling of not being in total control, can be intensified by concerns about the health and well-being of both the pregnant woman and the baby.

At the same time, the pregnant woman may face a multitude of thoughts and fears. Common concerns they include fear for the baby's health and development, fear of complications during childbirth, and doubts about her ability to face the challenges ahead. Often the woman may experience feelings of guilt, which are based on her belief that she is solely responsible for the course and outcome of the pregnancy.

THE psychological effect of a high-risk pregnancy can be profound, as the pregnant woman may experience increased stress, anxiety, sleep and mood disturbances or even symptoms of depression, which in turn can lead to a sense of hopelessness, isolation and psychological distress.

A high-risk pregnancy can have an impact not only on the mother-to-be, but also on social environment including partner, family and friends. Loved ones may also experience stress, anxiety and worry about the well-being of mother and baby.

How can the psychologist help in high-risk pregnancy?

The psychologist can play a crucial role in providing psychological support and guidance to the expectant mother who is experiencing a high-risk pregnancy.

Within the safe therapeutic framework, the pregnant woman can:

  • To openly express her fears and concerns and to be listened to without being judged.
  • Learn to manage stress and deal with feelings of guilt and hopelessness.
  • Develop strategies to improve sleep.
  • To improve effective communication skills with partner and family.
  • To trust her ability to face challenges.
  • To strengthen her mental resilience and promote her overall well-being.

The Power of Support Groups

Joining support groups can be especially beneficial for women facing a high-risk pregnancy. In the therapeutic group setting, pregnant women can connect with other women going through similar experiences, providing mutual understanding, compassion and a sense of belonging. Group therapy offers a safe space to process emotions collectively, reducing feelings of isolation and promoting emotional recovery.

You are not alone in this journey, together with your support team, you can walk it with hope, strength and determination and come out of it stronger than ever!

The support groups take place online and are coordinated by Polina Flevari (Psychologist MSc & Existential Psychotherapist) and Maria Malapetsa (Mental Health Counselor & Systemic Psychotherapist).
